Ole Miss offense rides running game in win over South Carolina; Kewan Lacy shines in career night
OXFORD, Miss. — The Ole Miss Rebels improved to 8-1 on the season with a 30-14 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks at Vaught Hemingway Stadium Saturday night.
The Rebels’ fifth conference win of the season came with the help of standout sophomore running back Kewan Lacy who notched a career night against the Gamecocks’ defense.
Lacy recorded a career high in rushing yards on Saturday, going for 167 yards, including breaking off a 54-yard touchdown run to ice the game late in the fourth quarter. Lacy did all this on 24 carries, where he averaged a tremendous 7 yards a carry.

Overall, Ole Miss rushed for 258 yards and 2 touchdowns, averaging 5.4 yards a carry collectively.
Other notable rushers in Saturday’s win include Trinidad Chambliss, Deuce Alexander, and an unsuspecting Oscar Bird.
Bird, the Rebels’ punter, ignited the Vaught crowd early as what looked to be a quick three-and-out for Ole Miss to start the game, actually ended up being a fake punt which Bird took 18 yards for a first down.

While Alexander only had one carry on the night, it was a big one. He took an end around 22 yards for a crucial first down that converted a 4th-and-1 and put the Rebels on the Gamecocks’ 25-yard line.

Chambliss was the team’s second-highest rusher on the day. While he did not have his strongest day in the air, he still provided with his legs. He finished the night with 15 carries for 59 yards, including a 15-yard tuck-and-run touchdown to give the Rebels a 17-7 lead.

Ole Miss was able to make this push on the ground as a result of their offensive line dominating the trenches and allowing lanes to break through.
Overall, the Rebels’ running game was the deciding factor offensively with Chambliss struggling to find his rhythm in the air, as Lacy, once again, was too much for the opponents’ defense.
A Look Ahead
Ole Miss will return to action next Saturday as they host their final non-conference opponent of the year when The Citadel Bulldogs travel to Oxford.
Following the Bulldogs, Ole Miss will host the Florida Gators before traveling to Starkville for the coveted Egg Bowl against Mississippi State to close the regular season.
