Notes and Notables: Ole Miss Takes Down Sooners for Biggest Road Win of Rebels’ Season

NORMAN — Ole Miss football went to Norman, Oklahoma and defeated the Sooners, 34-26, Saturday to take a huge step forward on the Rebels’ potential path to the college football playoffs.

Here are news and notables from the win courtesy of Ole Miss Athletics.

SERIES INFORMATION

• This was the third meeting all-time between the Rebels and Sooners, the first in Norman … Ole Miss leads the series 3-0.

• This was the first ranked meeting all-time between Ole Miss and Oklahoma … Other series contests included the 1999 Independence Bowl (W, 27-25), the final college football game of the millennium, and OU’s first trip to Oxford last fall (W, 26-14).

• Head coach Lane Kiffin is 2-1 all-time against Oklahoma, including a 2-0 record at Ole Miss and an 0-1 mark while at FAU.

CAPTAINS

• Will Echoles (DT), Suntarine Perkins (LB), De’Zhaun Stribling (WR)

STARTERS

• OL Jayden Williams is Ole Miss’ active career leader in starts, making his 27th today at right tackle.

• LB TJ Dottery and LT Diego Pounds made their 17th consecutive starts at Ole Miss, which leads all active Rebels.

• S Jaylon Braxton made his first start as a Rebel, the ninth of his career.

GENERAL NOTES

• Today’s attendance was 83,468.

• Ole Miss was the 100th opponent to play in Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, which celebrated its 100th anniversary back on Oct. 17.

• This was Ole Miss’ first ranked road win since beating No. 22 Tulane in New Orleans on Sept. 9, 2023 (37-20), and this was the highest-ranked road win for Ole Miss since besting No. 8 Texas A&M in College Station on Nov. 12, 2016 (29-28).

OFFENSIVE NOTES

• QB Trinidad Chambliss finished with 368 yards of total offense, his fourth game in six starts with at least 350 … Chambliss was 24-of-44 passing for 315 yards and one TD, while he rushed 12 times for 53 yards.

• Chambliss is the first Ole Miss QB with at least 250 yards passing through the first six starts of a career since Eli Manning in 2001 … Manning did so six times before throwing for 249 yards against LSU.

• RB Kewan Lacy rushed 27 times for 78 yards and two rushing touchdowns … This was Lacy’s fifth multi-rushing TD game of the season, his third in a row.

• At 12 rushing touchdowns this year, Lacy is now tied for eighth on the Ole Miss single-season rushing TD list with Deuce McAllister (1999), Scottie Phillips (2018) and John Rhys Plumlee (2019).

• WR Winston Watkins led Ole Miss with a career-high 111 yards on four catches, the most yards by a Rebel freshman since Elijah Moore had 129 vs. South Carolina in 2018.

• WR Harrison Wallace III led the Rebels with five catches for 64 yards, while Cayden Lee had 60 yards on three catches … Ole Miss has had at least three receivers with 60 yards in four games this season.

DEFENSIVE NOTES

• Ole Miss tied a season-high with six tackles for loss.

• Ole Miss scored a safety in the second quarter after a shared tackle for loss in the endzone by LB Princewill Umanmielen and DT Will Echoles … This was the first safety scored by the Rebels since Kentucky’s Will Levis was flagged for intentional grounding in the endzone in 2022.

• Umanmielen was tied for the team lead with six tackles, which included career highs in TFL (2.0) and sacks (1.5) … Umanmielen now has 5.5 TFL and 3.5 sacks this season.

• LB Suntarine Perkins had 1.5 TFL and a key pass breakup alongside five tackles … Perkins is up to 22.5 career TFL as a Rebel.

• DE Kam Franklin had 1.5 TFL, including a solo sack … Franklin is up to 5.0 sacks in his career, 2.5 each across this season and his freshman year.

• S Wydett Williams Jr. led with two pass breakups, including the game-ender near the endzone … Williams Jr. leads all Rebels this season with six pass breakups.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES

• K Lucas Carneiro was 4-of-4 on field goals and 2-of-2 on PATs … Carneiro’s four made field goals ties a career-high and ranks as an Ole Miss career-best, and are the most by a Rebel since Caden Davis made four against No. 2 Georgia in 2024.

• Carneiro’s 16 field goals this season have him tied for 11th in Ole Miss single-season history, and his 77 points this year has landed him within the top-20 in the Rebel record books.

• TE Trace Bruckler forced the first fumble of his career, a crucial turnover for the Rebels in the fourth quarter just one drive after catching his first touchdown as a Rebel.

• P Oscar Bird punted a career-high five times for 213 yards, hitting a long of 50 while pinning three inside the 20.
