Nerves Soon Vanished as Trinidad Chambliss Led Ole Miss to Victory in Debut Start: ‘My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was with me the whole time’

OXFORD, Miss. — Ole Miss football made it three wins out of three this past Saturday and moved to 3-0, overall, and 2-0 in the SEC after beating Arkansas 41-35 at Vaught-Hemingway.

The Rebels put up 475 offensive yards on their way to a 41-35 victory over the Razorbacks. Most of those yards came from the debut of quarterback Trinidad Chambliss who stepped in for the injured Austin Simmons.

The transfer, who arrived on the Ole Miss campus in July, threw for 353 yards and added 62 rushing yards in an impressive performance from the dual-threat talent.

From Ferris State to the SEC

Chambliss spent three seasons with Division II Ferris State before hitting the transfer portal this spring. He landed with Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss team in Oxford, looking to get his name out there in his final college season.

After the Arkansas game, his first start in an SEC matchup, he commented on his appreciation for the fans in the stadium, which was unlike anything he had previously experienced.

It was a great atmosphere. I loved seeing all the fans, the stripe out was amazing, seeing the blue and red. It’s a little bit different from Ferris State, but football is football, there are 11 guys out there on offense, 11 on defense, and you’ve just got to play ball.

Nerves Soon Disappeared for Chambliss

Chambliss said he was a little nervous entering the game, but some of the plays he executed made it seem as though there were no nerves at all.

The Grand Rapids, Michigan native laid some beautiful passes into his receivers’ hands and orchestrated some excellent drives.

He was frank when asked if he was nervous to start the game — and also very open about what is a source of strength to him.

Yes, I was a little nervous. I’d be lying to you if I told you I wasn’t. But, you know, God’s got me, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was with me the whole time. But, yeah, I was a little nervous.

He didn’t play like someone making his first SEC start.

He was asked when the nerves disappeared in the game.

Probably after my first run. Usually, when I get hit first and feel some contact, and it’s like, ‘okay, we are playing football, it’s just a game. I have been playing this since I was a little kid.’ That’s when I calmed down and felt good.

After the game was over, Chambliss spent time signing autographs and taking pictures with what seemed like anyone who wanted them.

It’s a dream come true. You know, you dream of moments like this. Coming from a D2, I’m very grateful and appreciative, for the opportunity that arose today. And I’m just going to soak it all in, interact with all the fans because that was me when I was little. So, yeah. Cool.

Next Up

Ole Miss will be back in action in Week 4 against Tulane on September 20 with kickoff set for 2:30 p.m. CT. One would imagine Coach Kiffin has some questions regarding the quarterback position if Simmons has recovered enough to play. Could we see both players utilized at the position?
