Harrison Wallace III Shines in Ole Miss Debut, Emerging as Key Receiver and Punt Returner

OXFORD, Miss. — Ole Miss added a number of new wide receivers via the transfer portal this offseason. One of those is Harrison Wallace III, who left Penn State to work with Lane Kiffin and the Rebels.

In his first start in the red and blue, Wallace led the team in receiving yards, finishing with 130 and one touchdown. He also had a productive day as a punt returner, racking up 69 yards on 4 returns.

Wallace, who also goes by ‘Trey,’ showed in this first game how important he can be for the Ole Miss passing game. He has stepped into a different offense, but his four years of experience with the Nittany Lions have helped him transition smoothly into a new system.

As a veteran player, the years I’ve played, the things I have done over time have helped me learn the playbook. I felt like it was a pretty smooth transition.

Wallace, who is on the Biletnikoff Award preseason watch list and named to the Senior Bowl Top-300,  has also picked up some extra work, a new feather in his cap. The senior now looks to be the punt returner for Ole Miss, something he seems pretty good at, with one reporter asking about his play at the position against Georgia State.

Wallace confirmed that he had no idea he would fill that role when he transferred.

It wasn’t really something we talked about through the transfer portal window. It’s like a role I stepped into once I got here, just practicing and competing with the guys. I will say I felt pretty comfortable out there. Playing baseball over the years, it’s kind of like playing center field.

When asked if he had done any punt returning at Penn State, Wallace replied, “This was my first time doing it.”

How did he learn that he would be taking those reps? He saw his name on the depth chart in practice.

Wallace’s versatility and willing spirit — along with his obvious talent — all help towards his eventual goal of playing in the NFL as having additional layers to one’s game is always beneficial.

For now, he is doing all he can to help Ole Miss to have a successful season, and it would be amazing to see him return a punt for a touchdown this year. Hotty Toddy!
