Three Things OL Delano Townsend Had to Say After Wrapping Up First Week of Fall Camp

OXFORD, Miss. – After Ole Miss wrapped up its first week of fall camp on Friday, three players were available to the media, with offensive lineman Delano Townsend among those three. Here are the key points Townsend made during his post-practice press conference.

What he’ll bring to the OL

“Just me being me, bringing the intensity,” Townsend said. “Being the dirty offensive lineman that I need to be.”

That is exactly what Ole Miss needs from him. With new starting quarterback Austin Simmons at the helm, he’ll need all the support from the line that he can get in order to be successful.

The Rebels offered Townsend soon after he entered the transfer portal, and he chose Ole Miss over Mississippi State, Arkansas and others. The Flint, Michigan native, a guard, played in all 12 games for UAB this past season after redshirting in 2023. He only gave up one sack in 2024 in 464 pass blocking snaps.

Now that he’s in Oxford, the hopes are that he’ll prove just how underrated he was as he plays a significant part on the offensive line as the Rebels head into 2025.

The biggest thing he’s learned since the spring

Just the whole speed of the game, coming from my last school,” Townsend said about the difference in programs.

It’s more intense; the speed of the game is just at a higher level.

Understandably, one of the more significant adjustments he’s had to make is going from a Group of Five school in UAB to a Power Four school in Ole Miss.

Tougher opponents introduce tougher competition, which allows players like Townsend to thrive and battle through the adversity to stand out among the rest.

Only time will tell how Townsend will be able to adapt throughout fall camp and how well he’ll perform once the season is in full swing, but he’s got the right mentality.

Relationship with OL coach John Garrison

Coach Garrison is great, he’s been the same ever since I came for my visit. Great coach, he’s going to let you know what you need to hear and what you need to work on.

This speaks to the type of coach that Garrison is: one who’s passionate and caring — and one who wants perfection. .If he can get that production out of guys like Townsend, it will go a long way toward making the 2025 season a success. Hotty Toddy!
