Ole Miss Fall Camp Report: Wednesday, August 6 | Insights, news, and player standouts

OXFORD, Miss. — Another day of practice is in the books for the Ole Miss football team, and we had the opportunity to watch several periods today.

As the evaluation and progression continues, many players worked with high intensity today, as the placement for schemes seemed to be in full effect. A collection of players stood out to me today during many drills, and some are ones that previously have flown under the radar.

After starting with stretches, Rebels’ special team action began. Defensive back Isreal Solomon and running back Domonique Thomas got reps as the kickoff returners within the viewing periods. We have seen a plethora of guys who have been placed as returners within the kickoff and punt drills, as special teams coordinator Jake Schoonover looks to improve his group that averaged 20.1 yards from kickoffs last season, and 5.8 yards on average from punt returns.

Offense:

Quarterback Austin Simmons once again looked to be in fully command and in rhythm with his receivers. Today, it looked as if he was focusing on moving within the pocket and on his deep balls. I can report  the arm talent from Simmons was on full display today.

Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss put his full arsenal on display today as well. With solid size and stature, Chambliss showcased how effective his run game can be for a team. We noted that when getting the opportunity to see the quarterbacks roll out of the pocket and throw on the run, Chambliss showed great ball placement for his receivers.

Running back Kewan Lacy once again stood out, and his elusiveness and pass-catching ability will be vital for Ole Miss in 2025. Logan Diggs and Domonique Thomas flourished during pass blocking drills, and I look for these two to be critical in protecting Simmons this season.

A few other offensive players who stood out today are New Mexico tight end Trace Bruckler, wide receiver Devin Price, and Wake Forest transfer wide receiver Deuce Alexander. Bruckler hauled in some extremely hard catches during practice and looked precise during the tight ends pass blocking drills. Price and Alexander showed out in the end zone, displaying some amazing catches during real-time drills and creating space with ease from their defenders.

Defense:

It was the secondary that really shined today for Pete Golding’s group, and that will obviously be pivotal for the Rebels’ defense in 2025.

South Alabama transfer DB Ricky Fletcher truly looks like a top talent; his hip movements and athleticism will make him a true headache for opposing wide receivers. His intensity is unmatched, and the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder plays every snap and drill in full game mode.

The secondary went through a collection of drills today that included working with the receivers, focusing on creating fumbles, and working on communication during pre-snap motions. Fletcher also takes criticism well when being talked to by coaches, Fletcher is always attentive to the words being said to him and takes everything on the chin.

Freshman Ladarian Clardy also made the very most of his moments during real time play. Creating many big chances, Clardy showed great speed to step in front of receivers and knock incoming passes down, and he was seemingly one step ahead during every moment.

The defensive line worked on some hoop drills, focusing on speed and strength off the line of scrimmage. Six-foot-five, 275-pound Kam Franklin once again caught my eye today. His innate ability and speed when getting off the line of scrimmage is something that most only dream of having.

In what seemed to be a different type of practice today, there was still plenty on display. The best part was redshirt sophomore OL Joe Koury going one-on-one against redshirt sophomore DT Jamarious Brown.

News

Ole Miss linebacker Suntarine Perkins on Wednesday was named a Preseason All-American by The Sporting News.

Additionally, Three Ole Miss football wide receivers – junior Cayden Lee and seniors De’Zhaun Stribling and Harrison Wallace III have been named to the preseason watch list for the Biletnikoff Award.

Ole Miss is tied with defending national champions Ohio State for the most Biletnikoff watch list selections at three apiece, ranking ahead of Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Michigan State, Penn State and Texas Tech – which each have two honorees.

Our next viewing opportunity comes Friday, and I’ll be there to give you all the news and info. Hotty Toddy!
