Former Rebel Trey Amos Making Early Impact with Washington Commanders

OXFORD, Miss. – Former Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos is making waves in the NFL, as the Washington Commanders look to solidify their secondary heading into the 2025 season. After a stretch of inconsistent play from their corners in 2024, Washington turned to Amos, drafting him with the 61st overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft—a testament to his talent and potential.

For Rebel fans, Amos’ rise is no surprise. The Louisiana native spent his college days locking down SEC receivers, showcasing the speed, instincts, and physicality that made him one of the top defensive backs in the conference. Now, the Commanders are counting on those same traits to help turn their defense around.
The Commanders’ Cornerback Shake-Up
Washington’s need at cornerback became clear after moving on from three corners from last year’s roster. Free agent Michael Davis was a disappointment, playing only sparingly late in the season, and remains unsigned at 30 years old. Benjamin St-Juste struggled to find consistency, often flagged for holding, and has since joined the Chargers.
Emmanuel Forbes, a 2023 first-round pick, didn’t live up to expectations and was released before the end of the season. He was later claimed by the Rams.
In the midst of this roster shuffle, the Commanders found a gem in Amos.
Amos’ Mindset: ‘Me vs. Me’
Following Friday’s practice, Amos was quick to share his mindset with the media—a philosophy that Rebel fans will recognize from his days in Oxford.
Trey Amos is that dude.
LOVE this answer from the Commanders rookie cornerback.

“I like going against everybody, man. It’s like being in love with the game,” Amos told reporters.
“I just love guarding any receiver, any day. This is a me vs. me. You know, the dog mentality. Just going hard every day, no matter who’s in front of me. Just having that confidence…just having that mindset where no one catches the ball on you. Not being hard on yourself, but just understanding, that’s your job. You gotta do what you have to do.”

It’s that relentless mentality that made Amos a standout at Ole Miss and a trusted piece in the Rebels’ secondary.
In his lone 2024 Rebel season, Amos started all 13 games, finishing fifth on the team with 50 total tackles (39 solo). He led the team—and was tied nationally—with 13 pass breakups, the most by an Ole Miss defender since 2015, and added three interceptions, a forced fumble, and 3.5 tackles for loss.
His performance earned him First-Team All‑SEC honors, while PFF rated him among the top defenders nationally with standout grades in coverage and run defense categories. He logged 16 total passes defended, leading the SEC and tying for third in the nation.
Built for the big stage: Why Washington believes in Amos
While some rookies enter the NFL with more talk than action, Amos is earning attention for all the right reasons. His focus on doing the job, mastering technique, and competing every day aligns perfectly with what the Commanders need.
Washington fans are hopeful that Amos can follow in the footsteps of Mike Sainristil, who became a reliable corner for the team after being drafted in 2024. Given the organization’s recent struggles in drafting impact players—none of Ron Rivera’s first-round picks from 2020–2023 remain on the roster—Amos’ early promise is a welcome sign.
Rebel fans have always known Amos was built for the big stage. His physicality, versatility, and SEC-tested experience made him one of the most complete corners in this year’s draft class. Now, he has the chance to prove it on Sundays.
General Manager Adam Peters is banking on Amos being part of the Commanders’ defensive resurgence. The early buzz is positive, but as always, time will tell. For Ole Miss fans, though, there’s plenty of pride in seeing a former Rebel already making his mark.
