Head coach Mike Bianco talks after Ole Miss drops game three to Auburn: ‘There’s enough blame to go around’

OXFORD, Miss.Ole Miss baseball dropped game three, 13-8, to No. 6 Auburn Saturday but did finish with the series victory after wins Thursday and Friday. The Rebels (37-18, 16-14 SEC) now prepare for the SEC Tournament this coming week where they enter as the No. 7 seed.

Ole Miss, who was ahead 8-3 going into the sixth inning, was plagued with three errors in the game that ultimately proved costly.

“Obviously, the three errors stick out and it’s true, we’ve got to make those plays,” head coach Mike Bianco said after the game.

But there’s enough blame to go around. We got off to a hot start, then the closer came in and we didn’t do much in the second half of the game. We had some traffic early, but we couldn’t extend innings and get the big hit. We kind of got stagnant offensively. Then when you make the errors, you gotta make the pitches too.

Mason Nichols started on the mound for Bianco’s team, and pitched 3.2 innings, before he suffered an oblique strain that bumped him from the game. After Nichols, Ole Miss went to six different pitchers throughout the remainder of the contest.

Coach Bianco reiterated that his team just didn’t play well enough to win.

There’s enough blame to go around, but at the end of the day we played really hard and it wasn’t good enough. We didn’t make enough plays or have enough good at bats or make enough pitches to win the baseball game.

Next up: SEC Tournament

Although they lost game three to Auburn, the Rebels did enough to earn a first round bye in the SEC tourney. They’ll play their first game in Hoover on Wednesday, May 21 and will face the winner of Florida and South Carolina.
