NFL Draft Expert Mike Detillier talks Ole Miss Jared Ivey’s UDFA Signing with Seahawks: ‘It’s rare to have someone that size, that quick and with the ability to make plays’

OXFORD, Miss. — As we wrote yesterday, former Ole Miss EDGE Jared Ivey signed Sunday with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent. The Suwanee, Georgia native and Rebel standout finished the draft without being selected by one of the NFL’s 32 teams — surprising experts, coaches and Ole Miss fans after he had been projected to go anywhere from the third to fifth round.

While it’s impossible to guess what NFL GMs were thinking, we did speak with NFL Draft expert Mike Detillier to get his thoughts on what’s next for Ivey. Detillier, co-host of SportsTalk on WWL Radio in New Orleans and editor and publisher of Mike Detillier’s NFL Draft Report, has been covering top draft prospects since 1985.

Improvement throughout his collegiate career

Ivey began his college career at Georgia Tech where he became an immediate threat to opposing offenses, appearing in 20 games over his first two seasons while recording 32 tackles. Though he was productive, his career took an even larger step forward when he transferred to Ole Miss in the 2022 winter portal cycle.

During his three seasons in Oxford, Ivey notched 125 total tackles, 16 sacks, 26.5 tackles for loss, and five fumble recoveries, one of which was returned for a touchdown. In addition to expanding on his skillset, Ivey also grew into a crucial leadership role on the 2024 squad.

“Jared made steady improvement each year at Ole Miss,” Detillier explains of the stalwart defensive lineman.

Detillier is correct as in each of his three campaigns, Ivey increased his sack total, going from 3.5 in 2022, to 5.5 in 2023 and finally to 7 in his last year. He more than doubled his tackles for loss from 4.5 TFL in 2022 to 12 in 2023 and 11 in 2024.

Ivey also proved to be incredibly tough and durable over the course of his 38 games as a Rebel, playing in 13 games in 2022; 13 in 2023; and 12 in 2024.

Versatility a plus for Ivey

Detillier also sees Ivey’s 6-foot-6, 275-pound frame allowing him to work in several roles across the defensive line while utilizing his athleticism to make plays.

He’s versatile with the ability to play inside or off the edge.

There’s no question that a healthy Ivey could have one of the most productive NFL careers out of a wide group of defensive linemen in his draft class.

If he’s healthy, Ivey has a good chance to make the Seahawks. It’s rare to have someone that size, that quick and with the ability to make plays — not only as an up the field player but as a trail player running east and west.
