Princewill Umanmielen discusses transferring to Ole Miss and relationship with coach Lou Spanos

OXFORD, Miss. – Week two of spring practices began this week, followed by a press conference with key defensive newcomer Princewill Umanmielen.

Umanmielen spent two seasons with the Nebraska Cornhuskers before transferring to the Rebels this offseason. At Nebraska, he played linebacker, totaling 15 tackles and 1.5 sacks in his two years. With Ole Miss losing defensive linemen J.J. Pegues, Princely Umanmielen, and Jared Ivey, transfer recruit Princewill Umanmielen is stepping into an immediate starting role. He will be surrounded by returning juniors Suntarine Perkins and TJ Dottery.

The press conference began with a question about whether Princely Umanmielen influenced his younger brother’s decision to transfer to Ole Miss. He later mentions in the interview that he will use his brother’s advice to follow in his footsteps and ultimately reach his goal of reaching the NFL.

“The decision was really mine, but he was looking out for Ole Miss.”

Analyst Lou Spanos played a key role in Umanmielen’s transfer and is now working closely with him. When asked about their relationship, Umanmielen highlighted Spanos’ attention to detail.

“He gets me right with the details… even when I do good on something, he criticizes the little things… there’s always something to improve on.”

He was also asked about the defensive line room following the departure of key players, while returning and bringing in several high value returners and transfers.

“We are dogs… it’s just say a little, do a lot, and let the action speak for itself.”

This season, the defensive line is looking to continue where it left off as one of the best in the country. We can expect Umanmielen to step into a role similar to Suntarine Perkins as an edge rusher.

Moving forward, spring practice continues and The Rebel Walk will be here providing content, videos, and articles. Stay tuned for all of your Ole Miss sports needs!
