Ole Miss Women’s Basketball Duo of Madison Scott and Sira Thienou Earn SEC Accolades

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –(Release) Coming off a historic regular season for Ole Miss women’s basketball with 10 SEC wins for the fourth consecutive year, Madison Scott has been named to the All-SEC Second Team and Sira Thienou to the All-Freshman Team, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Scott becomes the 20th Rebel in program history to earn second team accolades and it marks the second time the she has earned the award of its kind in her career, also securing a spot during the 2022-23 season. Overall, it marks the graduate student’s seventh conference honor in her five-year tenure at Ole Miss, as Scott has been named to the All-SEC First Team, the All-Defensive Team twice, the All-Freshman Team and was honored as the Freshman of the Year during the 2020-21 season.
Thienou is the first Rebel since Scott to garner All-Freshmen honors and the 14th freshman in Ole Miss’ history to earn the recognition.
Scott has solidified herself as one of the most highly touted Rebels in program history. This season the veteran has led Ole Miss in scoring (11.6) and assists (3.8), while also earning 5.2 rebounds per game. She boasts the longest streak of scoring 10-or-more points by a Rebel this season, notching eight consecutive games in double figures, while tallying a team-high 17 total.
That span of games of consecutive scoring began with a 30-point showing against Ole Miss’ in-state rival Mississippi State. Her scoring performance was a career best, fueled by 11 made field goals. Also, in that timeframe was a 22-point outing against No. 8 Kentucky, which led Ole Miss to an upset victory.
Scott ranks in the top 10 of eight different statistical categories in the Ole Miss record books, including becoming the most experienced Rebel in program history after playing in 150 games and counting in the red and blue jersey.
Thienou has wasted little time making her mark as an Ole Miss Rebel as the Bamako, Mali, native has been tabbed SEC Freshman of the Week twice this season, on Nov. 26 and Dec. 17. These recognitions mark the first such honors of her young career and the first awards of its type for an Ole Miss player since Scott during the 2020-21 season.
Thienou leads the Rebels in pick pocketing balls, earning the most steals per game by any freshman in a power four conference, while also sitting third in the SEC and 20th in the nation with 2.68 steals a game. Since the beginning of conference play, Thienou has recorded 47 steals for an average of 2.9 per game. With 75 total steals this season, Thienou is on pace to break the program record for most steals by a freshman in a season. The Bamako, Mali, native just trails Alisa Scott (1983-84) and Armintie Price (2003-04) with 81 and 76 steals, respectively.
Thienou’s defensive domination reached a new peak against Mississippi State, as she robbed the Bulldogs nine times for a career-best. Nine steals by a Rebel is the most since Price had 12 against Illinois on Dec. 2, 2006. Against Florida, Thienou strung together an immaculate 29-point career-high night, exploding for 22 points in the first half alone to become the only Rebel this season to score north of 20 points in a half this season, while grabbing a then season-high among individual Rebels.
The awards were chosen by the league’s 16 coaches, with each coach not being able to vote for their own team or players and ties are not broken.
Scott, Thienou and the rest of the Rebels are set for the 2025 SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, S.C. as the No. 7 seed. Ole Miss earned the bye and will await the winner of the matchup between Mississippi State and Missouri on Thursday, March 6 at approximately 5:00 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
