Jared Ivey Named FWAA Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week
DALLAS – (Release) Ole Miss football senior defensive end Jared Ivey has been named the Football Writers Association of America Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week for games during the weekend of Nov. 9, as announced by the FWAA on Tuesday.
Each week during the regular season, the FWAA has selected a Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week since 2001. The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce finalists for the 2024 Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Nov. 20. The national defensive player of the year will be chosen from those finalists who are part of the 2024 FWAA All-America Team and presented with the trophy at the Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet on Dec. 9 at the Charlotte Convention Center.
Players have been added or removed from the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list during the season. If a player wasn’t already on the preseason watch list – including Ivey this week – each week’s honored player was added at that time. This is the final weekly award for the 2024 season.
Ivey – who shared the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week award with teammate Princely Umanmielen this week – helped lead a dominant Ole Miss defensive effort in its historic 28-10 win over Georgia. The Rebels held the Bulldogs to their fewest points of the Kirby Smart era (10), their fewest total yards since 2017 (245) and their fewest rushing yards since 2021 (59) – making the Rebels the first non-Alabama team to best Georgia since Florida in 2020.
Ivey ended the day with seven total tackles, a career-high five solo stops, two sacks for 19 yards, a forced fumble and two pass breakups – including one that resulted in an interception for the Rebels. Ivey’s 2.0 sacks marked the 15th and 16th of his Rebel career, moving him into ninth all-time at Ole Miss ahead of Dewayne Dotson.
On the year, Ivey owns 31 total tackles (19 solo), 9.5 tackles for loss, 7.0 sacks, four QB hurries, two forced fumbles, two pass breakups and one fumble recovery. Per PFF, Ivey ranks as the No. 14 defender overall in the FBS at an 88.7 grade – as well as the No. 10 pass rusher overall at an 89.2 grade. Among just edge defenders, Ivey ranks fifth in pass rushing and sixth overall.
Ole Miss has never won Bronko Nagurski Trophy, with two Rebels making the finalist cutoff in cornerback Senquez Golson (2014) and linebacker Patrick Willis (2006).
The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the association’s full membership, selects a 26-man All-America Team and eventually the Bronko Nagurski Trophy finalists. The Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner will be chosen from the finalists named in November. Committee members, by individual ballot, select the winner they regard as the best defensive player in college football.
The FWAA has chosen a National Defensive Player of the Year since 1993. In 1995, the FWAA named the award in honor of the legendary two-way player from the University of Minnesota. Nagurski dominated college football, then became a star for professional football’s Chicago Bears in the 1930s. Bronislaw “Bronko” Nagurski is a charter member of both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
