EXCLUSIVE: One-on-one Interview with Ole Miss Quarterback Austin Simmons

OXFORD, Miss. — Ole Miss backup quarterback Austin Simmons appeared to have ice water in his veins as he took the field against Georgia after Jaxson Dart went out with an injury. Dart later returned, but it was Simmons’ poise in leading the team on a scoring drive after Georgia had gone up 7-0 that caught fans’ attention. Well, that and his obvious talent in throwing a football.

Simmons finished 5-of-6 for 64 yards all in one possession. Simply put, he calmed the fears of Rebel Nation when Dart went out — and he brought excitement for the future as the Ole Miss offense will clearly be in good hands if Simmons is at the helm.

I sat down with Austin recently and discussed what it was like to go into the game against the then-No. 2 team in the country with playoffs on the line. We talked about his mindset and why he felt completely prepared.

We also talked about his comfort with the Ole Miss system of Lane Kiffin and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, Jr., practicing against the vaunted Rebel defense, why he chose Ole Miss, the team culture, his personal goals, the impact of his father, David Simmons, on his life, and much more.
