Ole Miss’ Walter Nolen, Suntarine Perkins Earn SEC Weekly Awards
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss football junior defensive tackle Walter Nolen (Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week) and sophomore defensive end Suntarine Perkins (Defensive Player of the Week) have both earned weekly awards from the SEC office, as announced on Monday morning.
Both Rebels led a dominant defensive effort in Ole Miss’ 27-3 victory at South Carolina last week, the fewest points allowed to an SEC opponent by the Rebels since 2015 and one of only seven SEC games since 2000 in which Ole Miss kept its opponents out of the endzone. Ole Miss leads the FBS in rushing defense (63.7), yards per rush (1.79), sacks (24), tackles for loss (63) and is tied for the national lead in fewest touchdowns allowed (3).
Perkins recorded a career-high 12 tackles – including eight alone in the first half – and added 2.0 tackles for loss and a sack. The sophomore already owns 8.0 sacks in his career, which ranks second among all active Rebel defenders.
Nolen continued to wreak havoc from the Ole Miss interior, breaking through for five tackles, 3.0 TFL, 2.0 sacks and a fumble recovery against the Gamecocks last week. Nolen is PFF’s third-rated interior defensive lineman in run-stopping at a 90.6 grade.
No. 8 Ole Miss remains on the road this week at No. 10 LSU, with kickoff slated for 6:30 p.m. CT at Tiger Stadium and live on ABC.
