UPDATE: Ole Miss Defensive End Jared Ivey Suffers Injury vs. Wake Forest
WINSTON-SALEM, NC. — Ole Miss defensive end Jared Ivey left the field with an injury in the third quarter of the Rebels’ 40-6 win at Wake Forest Saturday, and he was subsequently taken to the locker room on a cart.
Our sources report the star defensive lineman underwent an x-ray Saturday that indicated nothing was broken. However, Ivey did suffer what is considered to be a ‘bad’ left ankle sprain that requires a walking boot.
While his prognosis is good, his availability for the upcoming Georgia Southern game is not known. Following that game on September 21, Ole Miss will host Kentucky on September 28 at 11:00 a.m.
Head coach Lane Kiffin was asked about Ivey’s condition in the postgame press conference.
“Yeah, I really don’t know,” Kiffin said. “His body language seemed short term, but I don’t know,” Kiffin added.
Against Wake Forest, the 6-foot-6, 285-pound Ivey continued his dominance on the line, showing why he was named Preseason Second-Team All-SEC.
Even though he was not able to play the entirety of the game, Ivey still tallied 6 total tackles (tied for second on the team and three of which were solo), and he led the team in tackles for loss (2) and sacks (2). He also notched one quarterback hurry as the Rebels pressured Wake Forest QB Hank Bachmeier all night.
Ivey and his teammates have not allowed a touchdown through the first three games of the season. This is the first time since 1961 that Ole Miss has not given up a TD in its first three games. The ’61 Rebels only allowed two field goals in their first three games, both to Kentucky.
Ivey, Ole Miss’ highest-graded defender (89.0) last week according to PFF, and his teammates have done a remarkable job stopping the run this season. They began the game against Wake Forest ranked No. 1 in rush defense in the nation and No. 3 in tackles for loss. They only gave up 46 total yards on the ground to the Demon Deacons.
We will keep you updated on Ivey’s condition as more information becomes available. Prayers for Ivey as he recovers.
