Ole Miss Safety Trey Washington Discusses the Rebels’ Defensive Preparation Heading into Furman Game

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss safety Trey Washington took the podium Tuesday after practice to recap his fall camp experience along with the Rebels’ preparations as they head into the season opener against Furman.

To begin, Trey talked about the transition from fall camp into game week, crediting head coach Lane Kiffin for ensuring that the team is extremely prepared for the start of their season.

He did a good job of that, blending fall camp into game week so we aren’t totally shocked by the different schedule with school and all of that.

Washington expanded his comments and talked about the recent mock game, which was held Saturday night, explaining that he feels the communication across the secondary has improved greatly over these past few weeks.

I liked what I saw, I think our communication was better. I think we matched concepts well, obviously, the competition isn’t as good as what we’ll see Saturday, so we’re just looking to get better every day.

As Trey hinted, the Rebs will be going up against a Furman team that finished first in the Southern Conference last season and second the year before. Despite losing quite a few key players, the Furman offense still contains a hefty amount of talent, especially on passing plays down the field, Washington believes.

They have some wider receivers that are really good playmakers and make plays on the ball. They’re good at making people miss, and plus their scheme sets up really good advantages down the field, so we have to do a really good job keeping a roof on the defenses.

Fortunately for the Ole Miss defense, they’ve had to practice against one of the most potent offenses in the country, led by multi-year starter at quarterback Jaxson Dart. Washington says that even after throwing for 3,364 yards and 23 touchdowns, Dart has improved on a large scale over the last few months.

Obviously the quarterback is the main engine. I feel like ours has taken a leap forward, and I’m excited  how it’s going to look this season.”
