Ole Miss Football Practice Report | Friday, August 16 Notes from the Field

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss took the field earlier this morning on a toasty, 95-degree day in Oxford, Mississippi. We are 15 days away from kickoff, and the Rebs appear to be right on schedule in their preparation!

Offense

Jaxson Dart and the quarterbacks were locked in this morning, practicing their throws on the run and perfecting goal-line routes with the wide receivers. Walker Howard and Austin Simmons appear to be continuing their competition for the second quarterback spot, with both finding a profound amount of success during camp. Though it may not be as important as some of the other positional battles, it’s going to be fascinating to see who Lane Kiffin decides for the role.

Just as Lane Kiffin pointed out the other day, wide receiver Tre Harris continues to look incredible in every aspect of his game. Despite scoring eight touchdowns last season, it would not surprise me one bit to see him reach 10 or more this fall.

It’s also worth acknowledging that WR Micah Davis is emerging quickly on the scene here in Oxford, and though he may be seen as a special teams player, he has the ability to step in and play at any of the wide receiver spots for Kiffin and this offense.

As for the offensive line, running backs, and tight ends, all groups were working and appeared to look full strength while working on their positional group drills.

Defense

Suntarine Perkins, who came to Ole Miss as a linebacker, was working fully with the defensive line group this morning. Though it has been debated whether Perkins will be a linebacker or a defensive end, it appears for now that Pete Golding prefers the sophomore coming off the edge for the majority of his snaps played.

In terms of the Ole Miss linebacker group, the depth and volume of players stood out to me today. From the looks of it, JUCO transfer Raymond Collins will be a nice addition for Golding, specifically in an outside linebacker role. Between him and Khari Coleman, there is a serious amount of speed on both sides of the field for Ole Miss. Another player who will be a sneaky depth piece is junior Tyler Banks, who has been with the Rebels since he was recruited out of high school in 2022.

In the secondary, it’s evident that Trey Amos is going to play a crucial role in the Rebels’ pass defense. Even though we did not witness it live, the Ole Miss football social media team has shown us a number of clips proving that Amos has no problem guarding receivers like Tre Harris. Look for No. 9 to take a huge jump forward this season.

What’s Next?

Fall camp will move forward next week, with more practice reports, interviews, and updates coming your way. Be sure to stay tuned with The Rebel Walk and, as always, Hotty Toddy.
