Ole Miss Football Practice Report | August 6 Notes from the Field

OXFORD, Miss – Lane Kiffin, and the Ole Miss Rebels took the field on Tuesday evening for their second practice in full pads, and per usual, the talent and skill across all position groups stood out at an extremely high level. Let’s dive into what we saw:

Defensive Line Flashes Potential

There’s no question that defensive coordinator Pete Golding and defensive line coach Randall Joyner have one of the best defensive lines in college football, but seeing it in person continues to be a reminder of exactly how effective and explosive this line can be.

While working through drills, the speed of both Zxavian Harris and Princely Umanmielen was evident. With Umanmielen being an edge rusher and also having experience as an outside linebacker, it did not come as much of a surprise. Still, for Harris, who is 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds, it was a friendly reminder of how dominant the junior can become as an interior lineman this fall.

Another eye-opening takeaway from tonight was the sheer size of true freshman Will Echoles, who already weighs 310 pounds and stands at 6-foot-3. Though we don’t know what his role will be, it will be crucial, and you can expect to see No. 52 regularly this fall.

How will Defenses Stop the Ole Miss Passing Attack?

It’s a question that has been asked throughout the entire offseason, but being able to see the quarterbacks’ throw live was an incredible sight. The connection from Jaxson Dart to Tre Harris seemingly works perfectly every single time, and we continued to see that tonight.

Along with Dart, the accuracy and arm strength of quarterback Austin Simmons were noticeable on the field tonight. Walker Howard and AJ Maddox also worked in a great number of reps, both showing off precision and accuracy of their own.

In terms of the wide receiver room, it was clear as day that rising sophomores Ayden Williams and Cayden Lee are going to be an important part of this rotation, regardless of who is starting in front of them. Both have added strength, experience, and improvements in their route-running abilities. The depth and competition in the room are going to make life very easy for Jaxson Dart.

What’s Next?
