Ole Miss Football Practice Report August 21: Rebel Defense Continues Physical Ways

OXFORD, Miss. – A cool, breezy Wednesday morning in Oxford played host to another fall practice as the Ole Miss Rebels inch closer and closer to the 2024 season opener just 10 days away. As always, we’ve got your practice report with all the notes from the field from Wednesday.

Offense

With the days winding down to the opening kickoff, Rebel quarterback Jaxson Dart continues to be the center of attention surrounding the Ole Miss offense. Yesterday, the Ole Miss media team dropped a short reel, displaying some behind-the-scenes work from the signal-caller throughout camp along with his newest sponsorship deal.

Returning to the practice fields and joining Dart in the backfield this year will be a surplus of different faces. Most notably, running backs Henry Parrish Jr. and Ulysses ‘Doo’ Bentley IV have been the center-point of the position so far. However, transfers Domonique Thomas and Rashad Amos have looked outstanding throughout camp as both guys bring a ‘north-and-south’ type of running style to the Rebel offense.

Utah State transfer wide receiver Micah Davis continues to impress me during practice viewings as well. The recent offensive addition has shown outstanding speed so far while also displaying stellar route running. Today, I caught the recent transfer making an unbelievable play on the sidelines.

Defense – Physicality shows out

Throughout the early weeks of fall camp, not much contact has been seen between the Rebel players in practice. This week, however, has been much different and today the physicality of the Rebel defensive line showed out.

Today, Texas A&M transfer Walter Nolen showed why he is so feared during drills. The Rebel defensive tackle refused to be moved during inside run drills, dominating his reps every time.

True freshman Kam Franklin has also stood out lately based on his size alone. The Mississippi native looks like a Jared Ivey clone out there while also showing off his tremendous off-the-line speed.

In the back end of the Ole Miss defense, the Rebel secondary showed great man-to-man skills during one-on-one drills today. Most notably, Trey Amos, John Saunders Jr. and Nick Cull were seen making the most plays on the ball from my point of view.

Cull, a sophomore, has stood out to me in recent weeks. Today, he showed great discipline by sticking with the receiver down the sideline to eventually break up a catch, check it out below.

Up Next

The Rebel football team will continue with fall camp throughout the week, just a few days away from the start of game prep next week for the season opener. On August 31st, the Ole Miss Rebels will take on the Furman Paladins inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium at 6 pm CT. Hotty Toddy!
