Defensive End Princely Umanmielen Breaks Down Recovery Process and Comprehension of Pete Golding’s Defense

Oxford, Miss. – Transferring from Florida, edge rusher Princely Umanmielen is undergoing his first fall camp in an Ole Miss uniform while recovering from shoulder surgery that occurred earlier in the spring.

Amid his recovery, Princely has been limited in practice, avoiding drills that involve physical contact. Despite not being a full participant, Umanmielen spoke to the media today, ensuring that the odds of him missing any game time on the field this season are extremely low.

“I don’t think anything is going to refrain me from playing in any game, but it’s a day-by-day thing for sure.”

– Umanmielen on his injury status

Even with no contact, Princely’s still been able to pursue one of the more difficult challenges he’s faced in college: learning Pete Golding’s defensive scheme.

“Golding does have one of the toughest defenses I’ve had to learn. I just texted him at like, 10:30 last night, asking him about a play. I’ve had to put in extra work. I meet with coach Lou (Spanos) extra and things like that so I can get his system down.”

In addition to recovering and trying to learn a new defense, Umanmielen has also come to the realization of just how crucial this season is for his potential as an NFL draft pick.

“I don’t think I think about it too much, it’s in my head for sure, but it is a really big year for me. I just show up and go to work to try and be consistent and be a pro every single day to make sure that I’m not taking any of these days for granted and making every day count so that it can be one of the best, if not the best, season that I’ve had in college.”

– Umanmielen on using this year to prepare for the NFL

Even with the draft ahead of him, Princely remains focused on this year’s defense, which he believes is slowly starting to piece itself together.

“I think this defense is coming together great, I think it’s going to be a great compliment to our explosive offense. I know its a lot of guys from different places, but I feel like every day we are feeling more and more like a team.”

– Umanmielen on the culture of this year’s defense
