Coach Mike Bianco and the Rebels glad to have transfer shortstop Luke Hill on the team

Coach Mike Bianco and the Rebels glad to have transfer shortstop Luke Hill on the team

OXFORD,  Miss. — Over the offseason, Ole Miss was tasked with finding a shortstop after losing Jacob Gonzalez to the first round of the MLB draft. As many schools do, the Rebels took to the transfer portal where they found Luke Hill, an incoming sophomore out of Arizona State University.

Oddly enough, Arizona State head coach Willie Bloomquist attempted to publicly condemn Hill last July for entering the transfer portal on the final day he had the chance.

“Based on the response from our players, they aren’t in the same category as Luke Hill.” Bloomquist said. “And I say that with the respect of our players. I know their makeup, and they were not happy with how it went down — not the fact that he (Luke) is gone, not the fact that he transferred. It’s just how it went down. A matter of fact, a lot of them think we’re going to be much better without him — minus the attitude that at times showed its head with him.”

When Coach Bianco was asked his thoughts on the situation last Friday at Ole Miss baseball media day, he defended Hill, saying that he had not known of the comments.

“Wow, that’s a strong question for a press conference. But no, not aware of those,” Bianco replied regarding Bloomquist’s comments.

That’s unfortunate that he (Coach Bloomquist) would say that. Luke’s been terrific. I think if you interviewed any staff member or any guy on the team, they’d say he’s been terrific, and he’s played terrific. He’s a great kid, a great player, and we’re excited for a great year.”

Ole Miss third baseman Andrew Fischer, himself a transfer, heard the press conference and made sure to defend his teammate just as Bianco did when it was his time to talk.

That kid has become one of my best friends now, and I’ve seen a lot about that comment. That kid does not deserve anything but the best, he’s the best teammate, one of my best friends, and definitely a hell of a player.

It’s safe to say that the Rebs are thankful to have Hill on the team — especially considering Coach Bianco has named him the starting shortstop for opening day.

As for Hill, he has continued a long-standing tradition of Ole Miss shortstops dying their hair blonde.

You can catch Hill and Ole Miss in action on Friday, February 16th at 10:35 p.m. on ESPN+. Hotty Toddy!
