Preview: No. 5 Ole Miss Men’s Golf Begins Spring Season with Puerto Rico Classic

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss men’s golf team played a great fall season and is looking forward to a strong spring. Currently standing at No. 5 in the nation, the Rebels finished the fall in the top 5 of three tournaments and finished two of those with second-place finishes.

With a 262-round score last fall that made history as the lowest-single round total in program history, there are high expectations for what is to come for this team.

A Look at the Spring Season

Ole Miss will play in three upcoming tournaments, the first being the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue University. The men’s team will compete against the Boilermakers from February 11th through February 13th. Ole Miss stands 24 places higher than Purdue on the scoreboard, ahead by 36.48 average points.

The Boilermakers have competed in five events, ending with a 44-19-3 win-loss-tie record, while Ole Miss has competed in four events with a 32-6-0 win-loss-tie record. Ole Miss led with par-5 scoring and came in second with birdies in last year’s Puerto Rico Classic.

The next tournament will be the Cabo Collegiate which has been well known since it was first held in 2010. On March 3-5, the Ole Miss team will be in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to compete. This tournament with competition against many universities will be a good test for the Rebels.

Vanderbilt University has won the Cabo Collegiate in the last two years. They are currently ranked No. 3 in the nation, having played five events and ending with a 41-2-0 win-loss-tie record, leading the average points by 32.96 over the Rebels.

Last season, Ole Miss came in second place during the Cabo Collegiate with some players notching personal bests. The Rebels will have to bring their best game to this tournament. Having played a better season this fall, expectations are high for the team.

The third tournament Ole Miss will play this spring is the Seminole Intercollegiate against Florida State University. This will be a very entertaining tournament, as the Rebels will travel to Tallahassee Florida to compete on March 11th and 12th.

Florida State, our competing team for the Seminole Intercollegiate, holds 10th place on the current scoreboard. They have competed in seven events with a 31-17-0 win-loss-tie record, falling behind Ole Miss by a 19.64 average score.

Last year Ole Miss played through rough weather and course conditions, but the Rebels played their best and came in third. With the current standings, we look for Ole Miss to perform highly in this tournament.

So far, the Rebels have had an exceptional season and we look forward to bringing you coverage of the men’s team this spring. Stay tuned to The Rebel Walk for more!
