Though the Rebs have gone through several inter-squad games this fall, it will be interesting to see a team with so many transfers up against a different group of Division I players for the first time in 2023. For fans in attendance, here are some of Ole Miss’ talented transfer players to watch.
On the bump, expect to get a look at Coastal Carolina transfer Liam Doyle and Arkansas State transfer Kyler Carmack. Doyle is originally from New Hampshire where he was ranked as the number three prospect of the 2022 class in the state. During his freshman year at Coastal, Doyle finished with a 4.15 earned run average (ERA) and struck out 69 batters. The southpaw has tremendous upside and can contribute to either the starting rotation or the bullpen for the Rebs.
Carmack redshirted in 2022 and improved to a team-leading 3.23 ERA in 2023. He was named to the D1 All-American (Second Team) and closed out his season with a 5-3 record. Cormack features a fastball up to 96 miles per hour and a “go-to weapon” changeup that sits 82-85 mph, according to baseball analyst Joe Doyle.
With the transfers and the talented returning Rebel pitchers, it will be exciting to see the firepower that is brought to the mound this Saturday.
Offensively, it has become clear the following four bats have a chance at playing in the starting lineup from day one: Arizona State transfer Luke Hill, Florida Atlantic transfer Jackson Ross, Duke transfer Andrew Fischer, and Mercer transfer Treyson Hughes. All have proven themselves at their previous schools.
After the loss of Jacob Gonzalez in the MLB draft, the shortstop position was in dire need of a replacement at Ole Miss, and luckily, the Rebels found that in Hill. He hit for a .314 batting average in 2023 and played 54 out of 55 games. In the field, he displays quick feet with an accurate arm, closing out 2023 with a .938 fielding percentage.
Jackson Ross out of Florida Atlantic had himself an all-conference 2023 season while slugging a .345 average with 90 runs batted in (RBIs). Ross also played in all 59 games while mashing 14 home runs. Rebel fans, expect to throw some beer when Ross is up to the dish in the 2024 season.
From Duke University, infielder Andrew Fischer will be putting on red and blue this Saturday after being named to the All-ACC Freshman Team in 2022. The third baseman hit for an average of .289 with 11 home runs. One of Fischer’s most impressive stats is that he only committed one error from the hot corner, resulting in a .979 fielding percentage. In addition to his numbers in the field, Fischer was also seen bench pressing 365 pounds per Ole Miss Baseball Twitter this September. Rebel fans should be eager to see the lefty bat and the efficient fielding of Fisher this Saturday.
Last but certainly not least, is outfielder Treyson Hughes. The Mercer transfer did not commit a single error in 2023 and also posted a .389 batting average, one of the best in the nation. Treyson will be heavily relied on in the top of the order after he stole nine bases and drew 45 walks last season. The 6-foot-3 stud is poised for a breakout year in the SEC and will make an immediate impact both on offense and defense.
Come show your support this weekend at Swayze Field and keep an eye out for this group of ultra-talented transfer Rebs!
