Madison Scott’s double-double leads Rebels to blowout victory over Texas Southern
OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss women’s basketball team bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 93-47 beatdown of Texas Southern Monday night at the SJB Pavilion.
The Rebels led wire-to-wire, including reeling off the first 18 points of the game. The defense was also prominent all night, giving up four points in the first quarter and forcing the Tigers to 25% from the field for the game.
Head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin takes pride in her team’s defensive performances, and she was quite pleased with it once again.
“We can’t ever forget who we are. We defend. We are the only staff in the country that wears ‘We Defend’ shirts every single day. We really believe in that.”

Coach Yo’s team showed that defensive mentality, forcing 18 turnovers and notching 10 steals. They also tacked on five blocks.
The aggressiveness of the Rebels was also on full display against Texas Southern. Ole Miss out-rebounded the Tigers, 55-29. This includes 21-7 on the offensive boards, leading to a 21-1 advantage in second-chance points.
“I saw high activity level,” McPhee-McCuin said. “I wanted every guard to get at least two rebounds, and, for the most part, they almost accomplished that. 15 rebounds for Madi [Scott], six from Tyia [Singleton], and then Rita [Igbokwe] followed up with six. That’s the type of activity level that I want from my interior players.”
Junior Madison Scott’s 15 rebounds were half of her second double-double of the season. She scored 16 points, shooting 6-12 from the field.

Coach Yo said that she has been hard on Scott for the past few days since her team’s loss to Utah, and Scott took that to heart with her performance on Monday.
“She told me what she expects from me. Coach Yo brought me here to be great. She holds me to a high standard. I know she wants what’s best for me. I just wanted to respond today, and I think all of our posts wanted to respond today. I think we did that.”

Coach Yo also sat down with Rita Igbokwe and Tyia Singleton after the Utah loss, and the rebounding differential showed their positive response to their coach’s talk.
Scott knows the leadership role she has on this Rebel team, so more successful performances are expected in the future.
“Yes, very much so,” Scott said about being the tone-setter for the team. “I have to do that and be more consistent with it. That’s my goal.”
