Preview of Ole Miss vs. LSU: A Look at the Tigers

BATON ROUGE — The No. 7-ranked Ole Miss Rebels (7-0, 3-0 SEC) are taking on LSU (5-2, 2-1 SEC) in Baton Rouge today for the Magnolia Bowl Trophy. The game marks the 111th meeting between the Rebels and the Tigers with LSU holding a 64-41-4 advantage.

LSU on offense

When looking at LSU’s team, quarterback Jayden Daniels is their game-changer. His ability to extend plays with his legs makes the Tigers’ offense a tough opponent.

This season, Daniels has thrown for 1,593 yards with 10 touchdowns and one interception, while completing 70% of his passes. He is also their leading rusher with 403 yards and six touchdowns.

The Tigers feature one of the top NFL receiving prospects in Kayshon Boutte. Boutte got off to a slow start this season but has 12 receptions for 148 yards and a touchdown over the past two games.

In 2020 when Ole Miss and LSU played, Boutte tallied 14 receptions for 308 yards and three touchdowns, so he is definitely always a threat.

On the ground, the Tigers are tallying 173 yards a game while they average 270 passing yards a game, for a total of 443 yards per contest. Their offense also averages 33.7 points a game, which is good for 40th in the country.

LSU on defense

On the other side of the ball, LSU is giving up an average of 21.3 points a game which is 32nd in the country. They are giving up 338 yards per game, 192 passing and 146 rushing.

Micah Baskerville leads the Tigers with 41 tackles. BJ Ojularin leads the team in 4.5 tackles for loss (4.5) and in sacks (3.5). Defensive back Jay Ward leads the team with three passes defended and also has a touchdown by way of recovering a fumble. Ward is second on the team with 32 tackles.

The Tigers are coached by Brian Kelly who is in his first season at LSU after coaching at Notre Dame for 12 years. His all-time record is 171-64.

Ole Miss enters the game as a slight underdog in these eyes of odds makers. The game will be televised on CBS at 2:30 p.m. CT.
