Ole Miss Football hands out 2017 Spring Awards
OXFORD, Miss. – Before the start of the Grove Bowl on Saturday, Ole Miss gave out its 2017 spring awards to current and past players from the program.
Here’s the complete list:
The Chucky Mullins Courage Award – Marquis Haynes
The Chucky Mullins Courage Award is presented to the upperclassman defensive player who embodies the spirit of Mullins: courage, leadership, perseverance, and determination.
The Eli Manning Award – Markell Pack
This award is presented to the most improved offensive football player based on spring practice performance in the areas of spirit, leadership, hustle, determination, and dependability.
The Jeff Hamm Memorial Award – Detric Bing-Dukes
The Jeff Hamm Memorial Award is given to the most improved defensive football player based on spring practice performance in the areas of spirit, leadership, hustle, determination, and dependability.
The J. Richard Price Courage and Compassion Award – Daronte Bouldin
This award is presented annually to the upperclassman lineman who, in the opinion of his coaches, has demonstrated extraordinary courage and unusual compassion in his dedication to his team and to Ole Miss.
Park Stevens Memorial Scholarship – Dawson Knox
This award is presented annually to the top walk-on of the spring in memory of former Ole Miss walk-on Park Stevens.
The John Howard Vaught Award of Excellence – Evan Engram
The John Howard Vaught Award of Excellence is presented to a graduating senior athlete. Qualifications are: dedication, scholastic ability, morale and performance.
Birmingham Alumni’s Club Annual Leadership Award – D.J. Jones
This award is a portrait awarded in recognition of a graduating senior football player for his leadership qualities, both on and off the field.
Clower-Walters Scholarship – John Youngblood
This award was established in 1974 by Jerry Clower to honor Carl Walters, a veteran Mississippi sportswriter. A plaque is awarded to an outstanding graduating senior Ole Miss Football player, as selected by the coaching staff, and a scholarship will be awarded in the name of the player selected.
National Football Foundation Freshman Scholar-Athlete Awards – Jack DeFoor, Donta Evans, Bryce Mathews, D.K. Metcalf, and Shea Patterson.
Evelyn has covered sports for over two decades, beginning her journalism career as a sports writer for a newspaper in Austin, Texas. She attended Texas A&M and majored in English. Evelyn's love for Ole Miss began when her daughter Katie attended the university on a volleyball scholarship. Evelyn created the Rebel Walk in 2013 and has served as publisher and managing editor since its inception.
