Ole Miss’ Will Golsan named SEC Freshman of the Week
Will Golsan wasn’t the most heralded freshman in this year’s baseball class, but as we saw in the fall he was a very tough out. He seemed to be able to put the ball in play regardless of either the pitcher he faced or the count, and he continued the hot streak into the spring. He’s been so hot, in fact, that the SEC named him Freshman of the Week this week.
Golsan did not start the spring season in the Ole Miss lineup, but as The Rebel Walk predicted after the UCF series, he did indeed break into it soon afterwards.
On March 4, in the midweek game in Hattiesburg, Golsan found his way into the Rebels’ lineup at second base. Ole Miss fans saw what the freshman from Columbus, Miss. was capable of doing in that game against Southern Miss.
Golsan showed he could hit and run, and he also showed he could flash some serious leather as he made a couple of spectacular plays in the field. He also went 1-for-4 at the plate.
Will recently made the move from second to third base and is playing well there, also. He has settled into the 2-hole spot for the Rebels in the batting order and has responded with a bang.
Last week he was instrumental in Ole Miss’ come-from-behind victory over UAPB as well as in two wins over No. 1 ranked Florida. Ole Miss finished the week 3-1, including the two over the Gators.
Golsan’s accomplishments last week include:
- Led the Rebels with a .389 batting average during the week
- Had 3 multi-hit games and a team-high 4 runs
- Recorded the first two stolen bases of his career
- Sparked a ninth-inning rally against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, before scoring the game-winning run
After having such a tremendous week, Will Golsan has been named SEC Freshman Player of the Week.
