Most Impactful Rebels for 2019: No. 18 Myles Hartsfield

OXFORD, Miss. — As we count down the days until the Ole Miss season opener against Memphis in the Liberty Bowl, we are releasing who we think the Top 50 Most Impactful Players will be for the Rebels this season. This series is a way for Ole Miss fans to learn more about players to keep an eye on this fall.

With 18 days before kickoff, coming in at No. 18…

Myles Hartsfield

Myles Hartsfield was a four-star prospect according to Scout and the No. 1 prep school safety by 247Sports when he signed with Ole Miss in the class of 2016. At East Coast Prep, he made 29 tackles, seven pass breakups, and two interceptions before signing with the Rebels.

As a true freshman in Oxford, the Sayreville, N.J. native earned Freshman All-America third team honors per Athlon and Freshman All-SEC honors per Athlon and Gridiron Now. He started in all twelve games — 11 at Rover and one at Huskie — and notched 43 tackles, two tackles for loss, and a pass breakup.

As a sophomore, the 5-foot-11, 216-pound Hartsfield played in all twelve games, making ten starts at defensive back and recording 42 tackles, three pass breakups, and two interceptions on the season.

Last season as a junior, he appeared in all twelve games, starting eight, en route to tallying 41 tackles and leading the team with seven pass breakups.

In the spring, Hartsfield was moved to cornerback where he spent most of his time helping the newcomers adjust to new defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre’s 3-4 defense. When fall camp began, Hartsfield was listed as the starter opposite of Keidron Smith and Jaylon Jones.

Last Friday after practice, Hartsfield — who has played at corner, nickel and the “shark” OLB spot — was asked about the differences in playing in the back end of MacIntyre’s 3-4.

“It’s more zone. You get more play-off coverage, not pressing every down, so the wide receiver can’t get a handle on what you’re trying to do,” Hartsfield explained.

“Playing corner, playing nickel, when you’re in man you’re in man. Much doesn’t change for us. You’ve got a little inside help with the nickel. It’s not much change,” Hartsfield added.

Hartsfield believes the defensive unit will be much-improved this season. “We practiced hard last year,” he commented.

It was the little things last year that got us beat most of the time. We’re just ready and focused more this year.

Myles Hartsfield

Hartsfield has been a consistent defensive back for the Rebels in his first three seasons in Oxford, and as a senior, we expect him to take on an even greater leadership role. Don’t be surprised to see more of the same type of production from the experienced senior defensive back in his final season at Ole Miss.

Watch out for No. 15 this fall!
