SMU announces hiring of Ole Miss co-defensive coordinator, linebackers coach Maurice Crum

OXFORD, Miss. — SMU announced Thursday the hiring of Ole Miss co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Maurice Crum to its defensive coaching staff.

Crum will serve as Mustangs’ linebackers coach and run game coordinator.

Coach Crum replaces Craig Naivar, the Mustangs former safeties coach and special teams coordinator, who has left to take over the defensive coordinator duties at Coastal Carolina.

Crum was a linebacker for Notre Dame, playing in 52 games from 2005-08, where he recorded over 300 tackles, eight sacks and three interceptions. He was a team captain in 2007 and 2008.

Crum spent one season at Ole Miss, helping the Rebels to an 8-5 record and an appearance in the TaxAct Texas Bowl. Ole Miss ranked No. 13 in the FBS and second in the SEC in fumbles recovered (12) and was 27th nationally and third in the league in sacks (2.69).

Following the hiring of Pete Golding from Alabama as the Rebels’ new defensive coordinator, Crum and co-defensive coordinator Chris Partridge were not retained by Ole Miss.

Before Coach Crum’s stint in Oxford, he was a linebackers coach and defensive coordinator at Western Kentucky, where he spent five seasons. He also worked as an assistant at Indiana State, Kansas and his alma mater, Notre Dame.

We wish Coach Crum the very best.
