Coach Davis named SEC Coach of the Year, Tyree and Davis earn All-SEC honors

OXFORD, Miss. — Ole Miss head coach Kermit Davis has been named the SEC Coach of the Year by both the Associated Press and the league coaches. Breein Tyree (First Team) and Terence Davis (Second Team) have also been honored by the SEC coaches.

Coach Davis was named Ole Miss head coach almost one year ago, after having spent more than a decade as the head coach at MTSU. In an incredible turnaround, Davis led Ole Miss to a 20-11 overall record and a 10-8 conference record this season, on the heels of the Rebels’ 12-20 (5-13 SEC) record a season ago.

The improvement of eight wins from last season is ranked as 11th-best in the nation–and best among Power 5 schools.

The Rebels, picked by media to finish dead last in the conference, finished tied for sixth place and will enter this week’s SEC Tournament as the No. 7 seed.

Coach Davis is joined by former head coach Andy Kennedy as the only two coaches in school history to be named SEC Coach of Year in their first season with the Rebels.

Dynamic Duo

Breein Tyree (19.1 ppg) and Terence Davis (15.5 ppg) combined as the highest scoring duo in SEC play in 2019, averaging 34.6 points per game in league action. The dynamic duo has accounted for 44.8 percent of Ole Miss’ scoring.

This is the first time the Rebels have had two all-conference players on the same team since Marshall Henderson and Jarvis Summers were named to the second team in the 2013-14 season.

Tyree, who has scored at least 20 points in a team-high 17 games, has been among the top players in the SEC all season.

In addition to being named First Team All-SEC by the league’s coaches, Tyree has also been named Second-Team All-SEC by the Associated Press.

The New Jersey native leads his team in scoring and also ranks second in the league in points per game. He ranks fourth in the conference in free throw percentage (83.1 percent) as well as sixth in field-goal percentage (47.6 percent).

Tyree is seventh in the SEC in three-pointers made (2.2 per game) and is the only  SEC player to rank in the top 10 in scoring, free throw percentage, field-goal percentage, and three-pointers made.

Davis is averaging 15.5 ppg, ranking him seventh in the SEC in scoring. The senior’s 45.5 percent shooting percentage is good for ninth in the league.

The Southaven native leads the Rebels in assists per game (3.4 per game) and rebounds per game (5.8). Davis is second on the team in steals (52) and blocks (20). His 5.2 defensive rebounds per game in SEC play ranks Davis fifth in the SEC in that category.

Davis currently has 1,492 points as an Ole Miss Rebel, placing him No. 13 on the school’s all-time scoring list. He is sixth all-time in three pointers attempted (504), seventh in three-pointers made (171), and 10th in steals (138).
