Mike Bianco excited about Rebels’ pitching

Mike Bianco excited about Rebels’ pitching

OXFORD, Miss. – After a long, cold winter in North Mississippi, spring is almost here–which means college baseball in Oxford is right around the corner. Spring practice is underway for the Rebels, who will host Winthrop on opening weekend in just seven days.

Head coach Mike Bianco, in his 18th season as the Rebels’ skipper, has put together an impressive pitching staff that will certainly play a big role in the team’s success.

“I think we can be good, real good,” Bianco said. “We’ve got as much depth and as much talent as we’ve ever had.”

The talent that Bianco speaks of starts with lefty Ryan Rolison who is expected to be a top pick in the upcoming MLB draft. Rolison will likely be the Friday starter, but beyond that Bianco has some decisions to make with the rest of his pitchers.

I think one of the things that we’ll have to try to determine is those roles in the first three or four weeks and find the right three guys by the time we get to conference that’ll start the games.

Head coach Mike Bianco on Rebels’ pitching rotation

Conference play begins on March 16 when Ole Miss hosts Tennessee for a three-game series. Bianco will have plenty of time before then to tinker with rotations to see what works and what doesn’t.

“There’s guys like Dallas (Woolfolk) and (Will) Stokes and Rolison and (James) McArthur who have already played roles and had success,” Bianco said. “But there’s other guys like (Will) Ethridge where we gotta determine if he’s going to start or be in the bullpen. And guys like Greer Holston, is he going to be a starter or reliever?”

Given the tremendous talent at his disposal, deciding on the final rotation and positions on the mound isn’t going to be easy. However, Bianco probably won’t be losing any sleep over what his rotation will be.

I like the talent, I like where we are on the mound. We just gotta sew some things up at the end and decide some roles.
