Bousfield wins Ferriss Trophy
Ole Miss’ junior outfielder Auston Bousfield has been named the 2014 recipient of the C Spire Ferriss Trophy presented by the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.
The Ferriss Trophy, named for former Delta State head coach “Boo” Ferriss, is given each year to the top college baseball player in the state of Mississippi.
Ferriss is a member of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, the Delta State Hall of Fame and the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame.
Bousfield joins prior Ole Miss winners Stephen Head (2004), Brian Pettway (2005), Scott Bittle (2008) and Drew Pomeranz (2010) and is the fifth Rebel to receive the award.
Bousfield finished the regular season as the SEC leader in hits (83). He also ranked among the best in the league in batting average (.353), total bases (117), runs scored (47), RBI (45), stolen bases (16), slugging percentage (.498) and doubles (15).
Bousfield was instrumental in the Rebels’ sweep of No. 17 Kentucky on the road. He batted .714 for the weekend, with eight runs scored and seven RBI. He was named SEC Player of the Week and national Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Bousfield is also a force to be reckoned with defensively. He committed only one error from his centerfield position this season, that in the final game against A&M.
Over his three-year career, Bousfield is fielding at a phenomenal .995 rate. He is also a semifinalist for the Gregg Olson Award which honors the breakout player of the year in college baseball.
